Inglenook Outreach

Every semester, teachers create inreach projects.  The projects are catalysts for experiential learning and adventure. The groups are small and the atmosphere causal, fun and informal.  Inreach accounts for 20% of a grade in one course.  The tie in products are presented at the end of semester. Inglenook Prom

Alt. 9 Prom was a chance for the 9 alternative schools to celebrate graduation.
It was a wonderful event.  The theme was the jazz age.  Student had a great time
dancing, talking and being happy.  Congrats to all.

Science is Life

Inglenook includes many field trips in it's program.  Recently, our school went to the Science centre.
One the questions about our trip was "Is the Science centre..a museum...an education gallery....a post modern mall....an entertainment hall, a nostalgia memory hall?   As we made our journey via streetcar, subway, bus our conversations about the Science centre as a thing...developed into some interesting discussions.  Once through the gates....our conversations turned into adventures, activities, learning about the Brain, reptiles, space, compression, illusions and many other things.   At the end of the day....maybe the Science centre was all of the above things.  After pizza, and a coffee...all things considered...."science is life"!

Inglenook 40th Reunion

Inglenook Community High School celebrated it`s 40th birthday in style!  Inglenook has provided a caring, safe, stimulating, innovative education for 1,000s of students.  Thank you all teachers, volunteers, staff for dedicating your experince, your energies in making this school so very, very special in Canada.  Our reunion party was a fantastic success.
Students and teachers came from 1974 through to 2014 to tell stories, celebrate, share their ideas and give inspiration to eachother!  Congratulations to everyone!

Inglenook Community School is very proud to announce that Morgan Baskin, one of our students is running for mayor of our big, wonderful city of Toronto. Morgan has been a student for one year at our school.  Last semester, in our Outreach program, Morgan volunteered to work with a Toronto councillor.  From our outreach program, Morgan had the opportunity to see the politics of the city and decided to 'fling her hat' into the ring.  Civic duty is so very important to our city and country.  We applaud, cheer Morgan for her dedication to civic life, civil society and democratic process.  Congratulations!

Community School

Inglenook is a community school.  We try to encourage group activities that creating a sharing, caring and inspiring ethos. Every year, we head up to the Kortright Centre to enjoy the beauty of nature.  Inglenook tries to connect the social with the emotional through our sharing of food, conversation and fun. Our pie ceremony is one of those activities.  On A VERY LONG picnic table, we count down the number of Pi and toast nature by having a banquet of pies. Its fun, social, emotion and community in one.

Chair Art Show

Athina's Craft ART 11/12 Had an project assignment to design and build a chair.  Seems like an easy task...but where to start? What is a chair? What can a chair say about our society, our psyche, our ideas about "chairness' and philosophy?  The class did a wonderful job at designing and building their chairs.  Watch out Milan! Here comes Ingl'design.

Obscure Clothing Day!

Clothing...we all enjoy creating our personalities with clothes.  But what about the obscure piece of clothing that you received at a birthday that you have not worn.  Inglenook Community School is have a Obscure Friday Dress event to appreciate the WONDER!

Outreach

Epiphany is an Inglenook student, who enjoys her academic courses, being part of the student council and Outreach.  Epiphany would like to enter a program at university in environmental studies.  At Inglenook, you as a student, do not have to sacrifice your hobbies, interests because of program or bias.
Epiphany is currently completing her Outeach at Matthew Genser salon.  Epiphany always has wanted to learn about hair dressing, colouring, hair styling and now through her Outreach, she is able to nourish her non academic interest. " The Genser Salon is a great place.  The owner sings Disney songs and the atmosphere is great.  I don't want to be a hair dresser but have always wanted to explore it as an interest."

It can be done....'combing' your interests and academic! Ha!  Congrats....Epiphany.

Ice Cream Infinity day

Ice Cream Infinity Day. last day of classes Semester 1

Inglenook Community High School celebrated the almost last day of the first semester with it's Ice Cream Infinity Day party. Ironically, it was the coldest day of the year, but students who were working hard to get in there final term work, appreciated the sweetness of the idea. And...it is not alternative to eat ice cream in the middle of winter?  I say yes, and so did students and teachers. What a wonderful way to have closure on due dates for assignments and term work.  Eating a 'Cookies and Cream' ice cream cone.

Outreach

Outreach is an essential program at Inglenook.  We would like to share a great new story about Outreach.  Erik Shaw is working with E.G.A.L.E. sponsor (Equity for Gay and Lesbians Everywhere). With their guidance, Erik is designing school curriculum to be LGBT inclusive.  His goal is to share his research with teachers to create a more diverse curriculum in History and Social Sciences.  Recently, Erik has taught a class in Classical studies, and researching a curriculum for Ancient Civilization grade 11 course. Erik has recently been asked by O.I.S.E. and the Durham board to give LGBT training for teachers in sensitivity and acceptance.  We at inglenook are very proud of Erik and wish to commend Erik for his service to create better educational environments.

Experience Edulearning

Learning is an experience! It can be fun! At Inglenook, we try to have a holistic understanding of learning and education. In Philosophy, while studying Epicurus, the students made 'posters' to 'wake up' the populus about the dangers of commerism.  In World Issues, students are constructing models of sustainable communities. To enjoy learning is to motivate learning. Thanks students and teachers for their courageous sense of wonder.

Outreach

OUTREACH

Every Wednesday, students do an Outreach project with an outside sponsor or teacher. This year, Ravi, our math. and science teacher is doing an outreach called" The Power of Food".  This group discovers new ideas about food in Toronto, through walks, talks and creation. Toronto is fortunate to have very supportive and innovative places like "Stop" that nourish their communities in education and food. "The Power of Food" group also creates menus, plans their own meals in our small kitchen.

Halloween

Halloween is a great time to use the arts to express yourself in costume.  At Inglenook Community High School, we have a contest were everyone has fun and there is candy for all.  In the Year of the Bee, we had an extraordinary amount of students dress up in very, scary and very spooky and satirical costumes.

ArtFlash Mob

This year in Non Traditional Art, the class wanted to create an interactive intervention.  After many discussions, we decide to walk through the new subway trains serving food to the TTC riders. Student

created 'artserving boards' as a 'artprop' to serve food to the TTC customers. The class started walking through the train at King station and finally served all the food by Davisville station.  Smiles, questions, and  art-fun occurred during our artflash mob. Joy to all. Join the Inglenook experience....next info session August 28th at 1 p.m.  Have a good summer.

Raising the rainbow flag

Although in some parts of the world diverse sexual orientations and gender identity are becoming more accepted, members of the LGBTTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-spirited, and Queer) community still experience discrimination, harassment and persecution. In order to address the challenges faced by the LGBTTQ community, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia was created.     Inglenook Community High school had a raising the rainbow flag to celebrate the day.  It was

beautiful day and students and staff made speeches and completed the ceremony with a outdoor dance.

MentalpaLooza Conference and events

Inglenook Community High School has a conference every year on topical, current issues. This year's topic
was mental health.  One in Five Canadians have mental health issues.  The conference was to explore the
issue of mental health in Canada, have an wellness village of seminars and activities and develop strategies

of how to deal with mental health issues in school and society. One of our activities was to create an 'breathing space' visual spot, that represented our idea of a space of our centre of being. It was a great experience!  Students and staff had a great creative time. The conference is an example of our alternative school committment to alternative education and differentiated learning.

Skiing

WE had a great day at Horseshoe Valley resort. The weather was cold but the sun was out and the conditions were great. Students had a wonderful day skiing, snowboarding and eating poutine. It was part of the alternative school ski club event, which had 4 alternative schools participating.

Bowling

Bowling is a great way to entertain, socialize and build community. During our orientation week, Inglenook went bowling. There were prizes for the best costume, the highest score and the student who helped make the event work. It was a fun event. the galaxy 'black lights' and music added to the social atmosphere. Whether students received a 'spare, strike, or gutter ball'

during their attempts, students and staff were very supportive and.....the fries....mmm..helped out too. Thank you, for a fun, social, event.
